May 1 Educational Kits Highlight Rights of Workers

Though the days of the large street demonstrations commemorating May 1 are long gone, ACRI’s Education Department took the opportunity the calendar presented as a springboard to discuss with students the rights of workers and the unemployed.

Education staff working in the Hebrew and Arabic school systems offered discussions and training on demanding one’s rights as an employee; challenges brought about by globalization; privatization on the local and international levels, and so forth. The educational kits produced for May 1 focused on freedom of unionizing and on child labor, and received coverage in the local Arab press.

In the context of May 1, Attorney Oshrat Maimon, who heads ACRI’s Center for the Rights of the Unemployed, gave a lecture on the rights of unemployed at the Haifa Cinematheque, which was screening “workers’ films” during the first week of May.
