To mark the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, the Forum for the Struggle against Poverty – of which ACRI is a member – invites the public to a special Knesset conference on February 14, at 2 p.m. (the conference will be held in Hebrew). The subject of the conference is “a national plan to struggle against poverty,” and it will mark the launch of a lobby of Knesset Members committed to this issue – headed by MKs Daniel Ben-Simon, Zevulun Orlev, Muhammad Barakeh, and Shlomo Molla.
The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is held each year on October 17, in order to promote awareness of the need to eradicate poverty. Every year, this day is marked in various events around the world, as well as in Israel. However, this year – due to the Jewish and Muslim holidays – the marking of this day in the Knesset was postponed to February 14. Incidentally, February 20 marks the World Day of Social Justice, which tackles issues such as poverty, exclusion, and unemployment.
Earlier that day, different Knesset committees will discuss issues that are related to the struggle against poverty: the Finance Committee will discuss fair living wages; the Labor, Welfare, and Health Committee will discuss budgeting for the Employment Service; and the Committee for the Promotion of the Status of Women will discuss the employment of women in their middle age.
