Eminent Jurists Panel to Conduct Hearings on Counter-Terrorism and Human Rights

JERUSALEM – August 20, 2007 – The week of August 20-24, the International Commission of Jurists’‘ (ICJ) Eminent Jurists Panel will hold hearings on counter-terrorism and human rights in Israel and the Occupied Territories, in cooperation with the Association for Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI). These hearings are the last in a series of hearings held around the world by the Panel as part of its global inquiry into the impact of terrorism and counter-terrorism measures on human rights and the rule of law.

The Panel will be represented by Professor Robert K. Goldman, former President of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights and former United Nations Commission on Human Rights’‘ expert on counter-terrorism and human rights, and Vitit Muntarbhorn (Thailand), Professor of Law at the Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok and UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in North Korea.

During the week, the Panel will meet with government representatives, senior judges, lawyers, academics, and national and international human rights organizations.
