ACRI, Coalition Partners Call for Real Affordable Housing in Jerusalem

In intervention, the Coalition for Affordable Housing states that lower and middle-income households should benefit from Mayor Nir Barkat’s plan, not only young professionals with academic degrees

On February 24, The Coalition for Affordable Housing, of which ACRI is a key member, intervened before Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat, regarding his Jerusalem Affordable Housing Proposal. According to the proposal, 20% of the units in the city’s new building projects – which include over 50 housing units each -will be designated as affordable housing. The proposal, which is scheduled to be debated in March, has defined young people with academic degrees as the main beneficiaries and target group for these affordable housing units.

In its intervention, the coalition explained that one of the main goals of affordable housing policy should be to provide assistance to low and middle income households, and encourage the establishment of mixed-income neighbourhoods. The coalition argued that the Mayor’s proposal, in contrast, would not institute measures to achieve these goals and stands in contrast to Israel’s newest master plan – the Integrated National Outline Plan on Building, Development and Conservation (NOP 35), approved by the government in 2005.

Details are available on the coalition’s blog.
