Human Rights Week in Israel, 9th-16th of December

We are delighted to invite you to take part in a series of special events to mark
Human Rights Week: 9th – 16th December 2005

“…because not all rights are protected”



10.12.05 – "International Conventions and Human Rights Education": A conference exploring this subject will coincide with the opening of ACRI`s fourth annual children`s art exhibition, entitled, “Children Draw Human Rights”. The evening will include musical performances by the Yafia community center band.
Venue: Yafia Community Center
Time: 17:30.

11.12.05 – “The Voice of Rights – because not all rights are protected”: A representative of the Association for Civil Rights in Israel will be available to answer your questions via an online forum set up by the Walla Internet site. ACRI’s staff will cover topics such as: detainee rights and police violence; citizenship, residency status, and migrant workers; bureaucracy and human rights; the rights of agency workers, the Wisconsin Plan and the unemployed; gender equality; economic policy; the basket of health services and educational reforms; the ambiguity surrounding the IDF’s open-fire orders.

12.12.05 – "5 Months Since the Implementation of the Wisconsin Plan in Nazareth: Signs of Success and Failure": The conference will be held in Arabic and Hebrew and will target the working population. The conference will examine the effects of the Wisconsin Plan on the levels of unemployment in Nazareth – from theory to practice. Sout Alamel will be participating in the conference.

13.12.05 – “Even When the Guns are Roaring….”: A film screening followed by a discussion on the topic of “human rights under fire”. The event will be held in cooperation with the Haifa Cinemateque.
Venue: Cinemateque, 142 Hanassi Boulevard, Haifa
Time: 19:00

14.12.05 – “Know your Rights”: A conference in Russian and Hebrew aimed at the working population, focusing on the rights of agency workers employed as security guards or in security-related employment.
Venue: Beit Zarubel, 15 Lebantin St., Rishon-Le-Zion
Time: 18:00

15.12.05 – “Quiet – Shooting”: This conference will explore the IDF’s open-fire orders: who benefits from the confusion surrounding these orders. The conference will be held in partnership with the organization “Breaking the Silence”.
Venue: Beit HaSofer, 6 Kaplan Street, Tel Aviv
Time: 19:00

18.12.05 – “The Welfare Department Promotes Rights”: A conference exploring the perception and language of human rights in the practical work of social workers.
Venue: Nes Ziona

19.1.06: “…and turn into a single scream”: An exhibition of creative works highlighting the subject of women and human rights during armed conflict. The exhibition was jointly organized by ACRI and the Kol-Ha-Isha organization.
Venue: Antea Gallery, 40 King George Street, Jerusalem
Time: The exhibition will run until 19th January 2006.

FREE ENTRY TO ALL EVENTS

In addition, special discussions focusing on central human rights concerns will be held throughout the week in numerous Knesset committees as well as media broadcasts on these issues.
