The Ministerial Committee for Legislation has approved a proposal that would see Israelis who served in the IDF and national service receive preference in applying for jobs, housing, etc.
On Sunday June 16, 2013, the Ministerial Committee for Legislation approved a proposal by by MK Yariv Levin that would see Israelis who served in the IDF and national service receive preference in applying for jobs, access to housing and in a multitude of other services.
The Association for Civil Rights in Israel strongly condemns this proposed law.
Attorney Debbie Gild-Hayo, Director of Policy Advocacy at ACRI said in response: “This bill would anchor into law discrimination and serious harm to the basic rights of groups who already suffer from discrimination and exclusion – Arabs, women, ultra-Orthodox, disabled and others.
“The bill seeks to prevent people who were legally exempt from army service from accessing basic resources vital for participation in society, including higher education, labor markets, and housing. Granting compensation and benefits to those who served in the military should not mean violating the basic rights of those who did not.”
