Video: End “Hot Return” on Israel-Egypt Border

Refugees’ Rights Forum to call on Israel to stop sending asylum-seekers back to Egypt, where their lives are in danger, at upcoming demonstration

The Refugees’ Rights Forum will hold a demonstration on Sunday, September 28 at the Defense Ministry in Tel Aviv, against the illegal “hot return” procedure of African asylum-seekers entering Israel through the Egyptian border. The Forum has collected testimony verifying that Egyptian troops are shooting and killing the refugees once they are refused and turned away at the Israeli border. It is estimated that dozens of asylum-seekers have been killed this way in recent years.

The hot return procedure directly violates the United Nations Convention on the Status of Refugees to which Israel is a signatory, including the notion of “non-refoulement,” which prohibits states from sending asylum-seekers into life-endangering situations.

The Refugees’ Rights Forum consists of eight Israeli human rights organizations, including ACRI, and aims to promote the rights and well-being of refugees and asylum-seekers in Israel. To read more about the forum, visit its web page.
