A useful tool to alleviate and combat police violence is by collecting information about past events. However, the Police Internal Investigation Department does not organize the complaints it receives according to the means that were used. ACRI petitioned the High Court of Justice against the Department demanding that it change this practice.
The Police have used various means of force, including batons, Tasers, tear gas, stun grenade and sponge bullets. However, it does not monitor how these means were used and their results.
The Police Internal Investigation Department receives thousands of complaints annually about police brutality. These complaints are a very relevant source of information that could assist in the reduction of cases of improper use of force.
“Thousands of civilians each year complain about police brutality, and no one checks what means are used against them. Is there excessive use of gas tear or batons? Nobody checks. This situation must end so that we can eradicate this phenomenon from our society,” states Avner Pinchuk, Director of the Civil Rights and Political Rights Unit at ACRI.
The petition was filed by attorney Anne Sucui of ACRI.
