Celebrating Difference

Dear friends,

 

Food is central to our memories. It connects us to our family, home, traditions and the culture in which we grew up. For immigrants, who live in a country where everything is foreign and sometimes alienating, traditional food is a reminder of home and can help to maintain a tight knit community life. I would like to invite you to a special event that connects food and culture, and allows us Israelis to get to know the different communities and cultures that live among us.

 

The Multicultural Food, Music and Art Fair will be held next Saturday night (4 June) in the flea market in Jaffa, in collaboration with women from immigrant communities in Israel and the restaurant “Farouk Bashuk.” Most importantly, there will be food: Gloria – an activist for immigrant families in Israel and a Colombian cooking champion – will be making “Arepa”, a kind of pita bread made from corn that is served with frijoles, rice, avocado and other delicious surprises. Jyoti from India will prepare samosas, dahl, alu gobi, malai kofta, chapatti and more – and its all vegan! At Joan’s stall you will be able to try “Hello Hello” – a crushed ice drink from the Philippines made from milk or coconut milk, red beans, tapioca, colourful fruit, ice cream and flan. There will also be stalls with food from other countries including Sudan, Eritrea and Thailand.

 

And there’s more! There will be handicrafts for sale from different communities, music and dance performances in the street, activities for children and discussion circles with Israeli and immigrant communities on a range of subjects – such as agricultural workers in Israel, caregivers, and the situation in private kindergartens.

 

So come along to learn and meet new people, and of course to eat and have a great time! I hope to see you there!
