The police have a great deal of power and authority, which are sometimes used in an illegitimate manner. In cases of interaction and conflict with police, it is important that citizens and residents know their rights and insist on them.
This is all the more so in the case of the residents of East Jerusalem – a population that is not necessarily proficient in Hebrew and in Israeli law and is particularly exposed to police misconduct. A new ACRI campaign seeks to inform the residents of East Jerusalem about their rights when interacting with police.
ACRI’s campaign includes a detailed “Know Your Rights” info-sheet, an animated film, and comics. It includes information on rights during detainment and arrest, police use of force, the rights of minors in arrests and interrogations, police searches, the right to demonstrate, filing complaints about police officers, and more. Although it was written mainly for residents of East Jerusalem, most of its content is applicable and relevant to Israeli citizens, as well, and it was therefore published in both Arabic and Hebrew.
ACRI’s campaign also includes a minisite in Arabic, intended to make the legal discourse more accessible. The minisite includes an animated film (see below) that humorously explains the subject, a self-test, and comics – all starring the fictional Suliman family. We highly recommend watching and sharing this film – even for those who do not speak Arabic.
