ACRI Strongly Condemns Proposal to Limit Court’s Authority

Draft Bill Poses Grave Threat to Democracy

JERUSALEM – September 7, 2008 – The Association for Civil Rights (ACRI) strongly condemns the draft legislation approved today by the Cabinet, according to which the Knesset would be able to legislate a law anew, even after the Supreme Court declares it unconstitutional because it violates human rights.

The Cabinet’s decision is cause for alarm not only because of its implications for the Court’s autonomy and integrity but because it demonstrates the Cabinet’s disregard for the Court’s role as defender of democracy and human rights.

Following today’s decision, the draft bill will move to the Knesset plenum where members will vote on it in three readings.

ACRI calls on all Knesset members to vote against this harmful bill and on Justice Minister Daniel Friedmann, who spearheaded the proposal, to reverse his decision in order to preserve the Supreme Court’s integrity and independence and to ensure the protection of human rights for all.
