ACRI Promotes Fair Representation of Women in Family Courts

In intervention, ACRI encourages greater Arab, female representation, conforming to the right ot equality

In May 2008, ACRI, on behalf of the Working Group for Equality in Personal Status submitted a written intervention to the Minister of Justice and the President of the Supreme Court demanding that they take action to advance the appointment of Arab women as justices in the family courts. ACRI’s intervention emphasized that out of a total of 38 justices in the family courts in Israel today, twelve are Jewish women, and only one is an Arab woman. ACRI stressed that the duty to appoint women to these positions, and Arab women in particular, derives from the constitutional right to equality, which necessitates fair representation within the judicial authority.
