{"id":1507,"date":"2011-03-01T10:33:31","date_gmt":"2011-03-01T08:33:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/law.acri.org.il\/en\/?p=1507"},"modified":"2011-03-24T16:32:12","modified_gmt":"2011-03-24T14:32:12","slug":"ngos-concerned-over-child-deportation-methods","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/law.acri.org.il\/en\/2011\/03\/01\/ngos-concerned-over-child-deportation-methods\/","title":{"rendered":"NGOs Concerned over Child Deportation Methods"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Human rights NGOs and aid organizations express grave concern over the fate of the children who will be held for unknown periods of time and under unknown circumstances at a new detention center in Ben Gurion  Airport operated by the Interior Ministry&#8217;s Oz Unit. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A day after &#8220;Strangers No More,&#8221; a film on the Bialik-Rogozin  School in Tel Aviv, won the Oscar award in the short documentary category, 12-year-old Esther who starred in the movie is\u00a0facing a\u00a0probable deportation alongside\u00a0an estimated 120 pupils from\u00a0her school. Esther fled from South Africa and arrived in Israel with her father four years ago \u2013 thus missing the five-year mark set as a condition to remaining in the country. <\/p>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"480\" height=\"390\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/5t0hs-0S-4k?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US&amp;rel=0\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><embed type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"480\" height=\"390\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/5t0hs-0S-4k?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US&amp;rel=0\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/embed><\/object><br \/>\n<br \/>\nThough the Ministry of Interior is obligated to publish its\u00a0policies, it has refused thus far to answer questions concerning the future operation of the detention center at the airport and the deportation procedures in general and those pertaining to children in particular. The only concrete information received at present are\u00a0photo shots of swings and slides set up in the airport&#8217;s detention center.<br \/>\n<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><br \/>\n<\/span>The authorities\u00a0have refused to elaborate\u00a0how they are planning to care\u00a0for the hundreds of children and provide needed protection in such exceptionally delicate and difficult circumstances: Will children be separated from parents? Would a time limit be set for keeping a child in detention? What type of personnel will be tasked with carrying out arrests and\u00a0supervising daily life at the detention center? What type of training would those who come in contact with children receive? Which procedures would be allowed pertaining to the use of force and handcuffing?
