{"id":10788,"date":"2017-05-24T16:50:37","date_gmt":"2017-05-24T14:50:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/law.acri.org.il\/en\/?p=10788"},"modified":"2018-01-24T16:44:56","modified_gmt":"2018-01-24T14:44:56","slug":"east-jerusalem-facts-and-figures-2017","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/law.acri.org.il\/en\/2017\/05\/24\/east-jerusalem-facts-and-figures-2017\/","title":{"rendered":"East Jerusalem Facts and Figures 2017"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Jerusalem Day 2017, as Israel marks 50 years to the &#8220;reunification of Jerusalem,&#8221; ACRI presents its <a href=\"https:\/\/law.acri.org.il\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Facts-and-Figures-2017-1.pdf\" rel=\"\">Facts and Figures 2017<\/a>, highlighting the continuous neglect, oppression, and poverty in East Jerusalem.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Below are some of ACRI&#8217;s findings from the report, which paint a concerning picture of the human rights situation in East Jerusalem:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>According to the Central Bureau of Statistics, <strong>323,700 Palestinian residents<\/strong> live in Jerusalem, constituting <strong>37% <\/strong>of the total population of the city. Some estimates suggest that the number of Palestinian residents is actually higher.<\/p>\n<p><strong>76% <\/strong>of the residents of East Jerusalem and <strong>83.4% <\/strong>of the children live below the poverty line, according to the poverty report of the National Insurance Institute. The poverty rate average in Israel is 21.7%, and 30% among children.<\/p>\n<p>There is a shortage of around <strong>2,000 classrooms <\/strong>in the official public education system in East Jerusalem, according to the Municipality\u2019s estimate. The cost of constructing these classrooms is <strong>two billion shekels<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The number of residents of East Jerusalem who appear in the records of HaGihon Water and Sewage Corporation is 192,281.
