The Knesset\u00a0passed\u00a0the\u00a0&#8220;Regularization\u00a0Law&#8221;, which effectively\u00a0enables\u00a0expropriating\u00a0private\u00a0Palestinian\u00a0land in the West Bank\u00a0in order to legalize illegal construction in settlements and outposts. This is the Knesset\u2019s most blatant interference in the\u00a0Occupied Territories, which lay outside the borders of the sovereign State of Israel.\u00a0This legislation\u00a0infringes on\u00a0the private property of Palestinians who are not citizens of Israel,\u00a0who lack\u00a0political power in Israel.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The law\u00a0clearly\u00a0contradicts\u00a0international law; it was opposed by numerous\u00a0justice officials,\u00a0including\u00a0Israel&#8217;s Attorney\u00a0General, who determined that\u00a0it is illegal.\u00a0Even the prime minister spoke of the law\u2019s international repercussions\u00a0and warned\u00a0that it could\u00a0bring Israel\u00a0to the\u00a0doorsteps of the\u00a0International\u00a0Criminal Court at The Hague.\u00a0Honestly, even those who support settlements should have opposed this law. How can they explain to themselves that the Knesset legislated a law to take land\u00a0that is not inside Israel\u00a0from people who are not\u00a0Israeli\u00a0citizens,\u00a0simply\u00a0due to the fact that\u00a0they are Palestinian?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We\u00a0refuse to\u00a0remain\u00a0silent.\u00a0We are\u00a0already drafting a petition\u00a0to the High Court\u00a0with other organizations and have requested that\u00a0the Attorney General and Military Advocate General immediately delay\u00a0implementation of\u00a0the law.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I am aware of the discourse that\u00a0has arisen\u00a0in recent weeks\u00a0against\u00a0petitioning\u00a0the court; however we cannot\u00a0stand\u00a0idly\u00a0by.\u00a0The argument to refrain from\u00a0petitioning\u00a0the\u00a0High\u00a0Court\u00a0asserts\u00a0that\u00a0the government\u00a0should be forced to\u00a0deal with the consequences of its actions.\u00a0We find this argument irrelevant\u00a0because there are human lives at stake, and because peoples&#8217; private property will be destroyed or taken away.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While\u00a0the Knesset passes a\u00a0law\u00a0that\u00a0threatens to\u00a0expropriate private Palestinian property, I believe that as a human rights organization\u00a0we do not need to consider politics, but rather defend rights. In recent weeks we\u00a0appeared before the High Court to defend the rights of Palestinians\u00a0in\u00a0two petitions that\u00a0ACRI has\u00a0been\u00a0leading\u00a0for years\u00a0&#8211; one is\u00a0against\u00a0the expulsion of\u00a0residents\u00a0from\u00a0villages in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/law.acri.org.il\/en\/2016\/02\/21\/firing-zone-918-infosheet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\">Firing Zone 918<\/a>, where the state has illegally declared a\u00a0military\u00a0firing zone; the second petition concerns\u00a0threats to\u00a0expel\u00a0residents of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/law.acri.org.il\/en\/2012\/07\/22\/khirbat-zanuta\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\">Khirbet\u00a0Zanuta<\/a>, in\u00a0the\u00a0South Hebron\u00a0Hills.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0new line has\u00a0now\u00a0been crossed, and we\u00a0remain committed\u00a0to\u00a0protecting\u00a0human rights.\u00a0The Expropriation Law, as we think it should be called, intends\u00a0to legalize illegal construction, but the law itself\u00a0cannot be legitimized.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Yours,<br \/>\nSharon<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gallery.mailchimp.com\/3476224e38bd22add086658b6\/images\/ba988b80-51cc-49d8-bac9-dc807fe1db39.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"138\" height=\"44\" align=\"none\" \/><br \/>\nAdv.
